How to Celebrate Young Children’s Important Successes

Learn to Celebrate Young Children’s Important Successes

It is important for parents to celebrate their young children’s important successes. If you are like most parents, you want to help your child to be successful. But, have you ever really thought about what success in your child’s life means?

Success Breeds Success

One of the Suzuki Early Childhood Education concepts is: Success Breeds Success. So, how do parents guide their child in the process to be successful? Typically, adults think of success in the long term. We say that someone is a successful business person, successful doctor, engineer, artist, architect, hair stylist, etc. However, they are adults and have had a long time to become successful. Most of us actually do not remember much of the process of becoming successful when we were very young.

Success is One Small Step at a Time for Children

As adults, we’re not always so good at thinking of success in terms of very small steps. But that’s exactly how you, as a parent, need to think of it with your child. You need to learn to be observant of each small step that they master. As a Suzuki method teacher, I know that I can help you do that whether you and your child are participating in the “Your Musical Baby” class or one of our violin programs. I introduce each activity one step at a time. When your child masters that step, then I introduce the next step .

Look for success in all the small steps that your child masters.

Master Each Step for Success

Let me give you an example. When a very young baby and their parent begin the Baby Class, it is a very long time before the baby does any of the activities. Parents model the activities for their child. But, little by little, the baby begins to react and starts doing the simplest things.

Another example is when I start to work with a beginning student and their parent, the first technical things that we learn are to hold the violin and hold the bow. You and your child must master both of those steps separately. Then, we can put them together and and really play the violin!

A Patient Parent is a Successful

But, it can be hard for you, especially as a parent, to wait for all those things to happen. We have to realize that it takes a lot of physical and mental work to play an instrument. Your child will progress at a slower pace. Why? Well, because they are a child or a baby! Be patient while your child develops the fine motor skills and brain power to do the Baby Class activities or learn to play an instrument.

Celebrate Success That Builds Confidence

So, if you celebrate each small success, then your child gains confidence to go on to the next step. As they master each new step, then they are more successful. As your child experiences each new success, they develop more confidence. The small successes are the most important ones for your child and you!
