How to Make Your Family’s Home Environment Musically-Friendly!

Make Your Home Environment Musically-Friendly

Is your family’s home environment musically-friendly? “Environment Nurtures Growth” is one of the basic Suzuki Education Concepts. Over 90 years ago, in the late 1930’s, Dr Shinichi Suzuki had attended some concerts where he heard two very young Japanese students play. They both played violin at a very high level of ability. So, people thought that they were prodigies and geniuses. But, Suzuki had another idea on his mind.

Parents Create the Home Environment

He spoke with the parents of these students after the concert. He discovered that these children had been going to live concerts since they were practically toddlers. Their parents also practiced with them consistently and helped them to internalize the music to become a part of them. Finally, and maybe most importantly, they spent time listening to recordings of the great violinists of the day.

Listening to Great Music

By then, record players were very popular. They brought that same beautiful music from the concert halls into people’s homes. Radio also made it easier and less expensive for almost anybody to listen to the same beautiful music in their homes.

Later on, cassette players and cassette tapes made music portable. It was really something to be able to put that tape in your Walkman and take it with you. You had your music wherever you went!

Next, CD’s came along and then MP3 downloads were close on the heels of CD’s. Now, with downloads you don’t even have to leave your home to go buy music. No more trips to the store anymore to buy that CD. Each new technology made it easier for parents to expose their children to very fine music.

Technology Makes Listening Easy

Today, all you need is the initial investment of an electronic device that will allow you to download the music. Then, you can buy any music that you want with a click. Better yet, there are many audio and video recordings that are available on YouTube for free. So, you say you don’t have an electronic device that downloads music?

That’s okay! You can still do it the old-fashioned way. Most NPR (National Public Radio) stations are still putting classical music out over the airwaves every day. I think that Dr Suzuki would have been so excited about how easy it is to introduce beautiful music and create a nurturing environment for a child now.
